Nothing is more alarming than an invisible threat.

If you think about it, a pandemic is pretty much one of the worst possible scenarios we could have to face. There have been plenty of movies that feature super-contagious diseases that play directly to this universal fear. While Hollywood might have a flair for the dramatic, real history has its own examples of catastrophic events.

From 1347 to 1351, the “Black Death” was nothing short of horrifying. This bubonic plague was responsible for the deaths of an estimated 100-200 million people worldwide. Now granted, we know a whole lot more about basic hygiene and medicine that they did back then. But other examples hit a little closer to home.

Just over one hundred years ago, the Spanish Influenza infected an estimated 500 million people. Of those, between 30-50 million lost their lives.

Even more recently…

Between 1956-1958, an outbreak of H2N2 influenza named the Asian Flu killed up to 2 million people. 69,800 of those deaths occurred in the United States.

In 1968, a Category 2 flu pandemic spread across Asia, India, Australia, and the U.S. Now referred o as the “Hong Kong Flu,” its death toll is estimated at around 1 million people.

Even more recently, we’ve had the Swine Flu and the Bird Flu. Luckily, they were nowhere near as catastrophic. But in terms of how quickly they spread, they were of the same concern.

As of this writing, the first case of the coronavirus in the U.S. where the victim didn’t leave the country – or have contact with anyone who left the country – was reported in San Diego.

Now, the point fo this article isn’t to spread fear. It’s to spread awareness. Contagious viruses like these are not going to simply stop coming around. The world’s population is rising, and modern travel is bringing us closer together than ever. It’s time to take a serious look at our options for maximizing our defense against the spread of these types of diseases.


It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when.

To date, there have been 83,379 confirmed cases of the coronavirus (or COVID-19). The number of fatalities is approaching 3,000. While most officials are not hitting the panic button yet, the unsettling fact is we just don’t know the full scale of how this will play out.

The CDC is restating the advice it cites every cold and flu season: cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, stay home if you’re ill, wash your hands. They’re not new or exciting measures, but they’re still vital.

But is not touching our eyes with dirty hands really the best we can do?


Boosting the Immune System: More Important Than Ever

In a nutshell, your immune system is a unique combination of chemicals, cells, and organs that fight off infection and combat inflammation.

Proper rest, reducing stress, and exercise are all great ideas to keep your immune system running in tip-top shape.

But I knew there was something more we could do.

As the founder of a nutritional supplement company, I’ve spent years researching vitamins and minerals. But as the brother of a cop and brother-in-law of a nurse, I knew I had to take my knowledge further.

Given the nature of my family members’ jobs, I wanted to give them everything possible to stay healthy. They’re right on the front lines of germs and pathogens, and their immune systems get put to the test daily.

So I dove back into studying the body’s response to certain compounds. In staying true to our company’s ethos, all-natural ingredients were the only options. I knew that there had to be certain items straight from Mother Nature to help us stay healthy and fight off disease.

Here’s what I found.


Immunity All-Stars

Chlorella. Talk about one amazing algae. This single-celled, freshwater algae is giving Spirulina a run for its money. And for good reason. Chlorella has been awarded the coveted “superfood” title thanks to its dense profile of healthy nutrients.

One study (2) took a group of people who were experiencing flu-like symptoms and gave them an elderberry supplement. On average, their symptoms subsided four days faster than a control group who received a placebo.

Tumeric. From superfoods to a super spice, Tumeric is the real deal. The active compound in Tumeric is curcumin. Aside from antioxidant properties, it is a huge anti-inflammatory contributor.

Tumeric also promotes what’s known as immunomodulating. This is a fancy word that means it stimulates a positive immune response pretty much across the board. Think of it as helping your immune system to self-regulate and perform the actions it needs to for each specific threat.

Mushrooms. There are over 10,000 kinds of different mushrooms. And now, we will discuss each one in-depth.

Just kidding.

But in determining ways to boost the immune system, certain varieties of mushrooms absolutely have to be in the conversation.

Medicinal mushrooms date back thousands of years in Eastern medicine. And they’ve stood the test of time. Here’s a brief intro to the fungal immunity all-stars:

  1. Reishi – IN addition to being packed with antioxidants, what makes Reishi mushrooms unique is their ability to chill you out. Their active compound, triterpene, produces a calming effect. The soothing goodness also facilitates better sleep, which we already know is crucial.
  2. Lion’s Mane – more antioxidants (notice a theme here?). Lion’s Man boosts your production of a protein called Nerve Growth Factor. It also helps support myelin, which insulates nerve fibers. All of this means improved cognition, less stress.
  3. Chaga – Rockstars of anti-inflammation. Chaga mushrooms also combat LDL, the bad cholesterol

I know what you’re thinking…

Another article about weight loss.

Obviously, there’s no shortage of posts, blogs, ebooks, etc. about shedding body fat.

But after personally losing over 100 lbs, I feel somewhat qualified to throw my two cents in.

I want to share my story because, regardless of how much info and advice is out there, so many still struggle with losing weight. But let me begin with a slightly-less-than-exciting announcement:

There are no “quick fixes.”

A few years ago, I sure as heck wish there was some magic diet or supplement that would fix what I had become.

I had never looked or felt worse in my entire life, one hundred pounds overweight.

I would get so out of breath from walking up a flight of stairs, you would have thought I just got done running laps around a track.

And the scariest part about it was how quickly it happened.

In my professional life, I was killing it. I began working for tech start-ups in Silicon Valley right out of college. Things started moving fast for me, and I couldn’t have been more excited.

The problem: my career resulted in a SUPER-sedentary lifestyle.

80-hour workweeks became my norm. I would sit hunched over in front of my laptop for long periods without ever getting up. It never registered how much I was negatively impacting my health. Today there’s a ton of research showing how detrimental prolonged sitting can be. But at the time, I didn’t even think twice about it.

My Recipe For Obesity

To add to my complete lack of exercise, my diet was awful. I’m talking junk food, fast food…just about anything except for REAL food.

The mirror never lies, and the one in my bathroom was brutally honest.

Something had to change…fast.

One of my business partners was into low carb eating, so I began asking him questions. I also began moving more. Slowly, I started feeling better. Once I saw some improvement, that was it. I was all in. No longer would I sacrifice my health.

Fast forward to today…

I’ve lost over 100 lbs and am in the best shape of my life.

And while there may be no quick fixes (at least not the kind that lead to lasting results), real change is possible. If I can do it, anyone can.

How I Transformed Myself

Have you ever heard of someone jumping onto some fad diet and losing weight, only to end up putting it back on?

I sincerely believe a holistic approach is the best way to achieve weight loss that lasts. Adopting a new lifestyle is what ended up working for me.

And to this end, diet and exercise should be the foundation. There’s just no getting around it.

I increased my physical activity. I cut out processed sugar.

Getting started is the hardest part. But once I got some momentum going, I felt (and saw) it. Changes began to happen. Then I got super motivated to do more.

As I continued my learning into health and wellness, I began researching supplementation. I was seeing some significant improvements though my diet and exercise. But I wanted to know if I could take things to the next level.

When it came to supplements, I was very skeptical. And there wasn’t anything about some extreme “fat burners” that interested me. Some of these products have been described as “legal meth.” No, thanks. I hate the jittery feeling.

But my slightly-obsessive research turned up some natural nutritional powerhouses that seemed like they had some real potential for weight loss.

So, I made myself into a sort of guinea pig. I tried a TON of different stuff. I made up different combinations. I learned that there are crucial, all-natural dietary elements that can turbocharge weight loss programs. And I had this gut feeling (no pun intended) that certain nutritional compounds worked even better when combined with others.

It turns out I was right.

Synergistic Nutrition

There’s a saying from science that goes “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”

It’s a fancy way of saying something works better as a result of each part working in combination with the others.

Through plenty of trial and error, I found five pieces to my natural weight loss formula. On their own, they offer excellent benefits. But my experience was that by “stacking” them, I broke into a new level of incinerating body fat. My energy went through the roof.

Here is the formula that helped me bust through plateaus and end up shedding over 100 pounds of body fat.

The Fab Five

Get down with ACV.

You’ve probably heard of Apple Cider Vinegar. It’s been around for centuries and has a ton of health benefits. But let’s focus on how it can help you shed some lbs.

The active agent in Apple Cider Vinegar is acetic acid. Being a short-chain fatty acid, acetic acid has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity. This works to lower your blood sugar – a significant step in defending against diabetes. ACV actually slows down the emptying of your stomach. You can say it’s an all-natural appetite suppressant.

SA recent study found that people who drank 1-2 tablespoons of ACV a day weighed less and had considerably less abdominal fat than the control group (1)

Fatty Fish are Fat Loss Rockstars

The Omega-3 Fatty Acids that make up fish oil have shown awesome effects on promoting cardiovascular and brain health. But pure fish oil is a must for weight loss. Piggybacking off of Apple Cider Vinegar, fish oil has been shown to curb appetite and increase insulin sensitivity. But it brings more to the table as well.

Omega-3s in fish oil have been sown to boost metabolism (2). This means your body’s furnace is better at burning calories for energy. And with exercise, this effect is even stronger. Another study showed that women who took 3 grams of fish oil daily over 12 weeks burned 10% more calories – and 19–27% more fat! – when they exercised (3).

The Power of Raspberries

The compound that gives raspberries their unique aroma is called raspberry ketones. Dr. Oz called Raspberry Ketones a “miracle fat-burner in a bottle.” I’m not going that far, but this compound is gaining popularity for a reason.

Raspberry Ketones have a similar structure to synephrine and ephedrine. These are two substances that have documented, metabolism-boosting and fat-burning properties. (4) Raspberry Ketones also are structurally-similar to capsaicin (the active ingredient that gives cayenne pepper it’s thermogenic effects.)

Mean Green Coffee

Fun fact: coffee beans have a greenish color before they are roasted.

The natural caffeine found in coffee beans is well known. It helps to curb appetite, give a nice energy kick, and promote fat burning.

But pre-roasted coffee beans are high in a substance called Chlorogenic Acid. This substance is chock full of weight loss properties. The thing is, during the roasting process, the Chlorogenic Acid is lost. So green coffee bean extract puts all the benefits back into play when added to your diet.

A study took two groups of people and gave one regular coffee, and the other coffee plus green coffee bean extract. After twelve weeks, the regular coffee drinkers had lost an average of 3.7 pounds.

The coffee plus green coffee bean extract group lost 11.9 pounds. Their body fat percentages also decreased by 3.6%, where the plain coffee group saw only a 0.7% loss. (5)

One Awesome Fruit Peel

There’s a small, pumpkin-shaped called Garcinia Cambogia. It’s native to Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and parts of Africa. So don’t expect to run into at your local grocery store produce department.

Lately, it’s been found that extracts from the fruit’s peel have demonstrated some pretty impressive fat-burning effects. This is due to the peel being rich in hydroxycitric acid. (6) What’s so great about this acid is that it helps inhibit an enzyme responsible for storing body fat. So the fat gets burned for energy instead of shuttled to your problem areas.

Garcinia Cambogia also can boost serotonin levels. This “feel-good” neurotransmitter improves mood (and can curb any potential stress-related snacking!)

From Good Results to “Wow!”

I feel it’s important to emphasize that a solid diet and exercise are the main drivers behind any successful weight loss journey.

But I also have to say that I’m not sure if I would have reached the results I did – as relatively fast as I did – without adding these five ingredients to the mix.

The synergistic effects of this formula of mine took me by surprise. The appetite-suppression working with natural thermogenic effects helped me do more from eating less.

What’s most important is that I kept the weight OFF.

Even though I’m not looking to drop weight lie I was before, I don’t plan on giving up on my weight loss formula anytime soon. I just feel too good.

Now when I look in the mirror, its honesty is something I can appreciate.

We’re getting right into the heart of pumpkin season.

For many, that means one thing: the Pumpkin Spice Latte.

Every fall Starbucks rolls out one of their most beloved coffee drinks ever.

And they are pretty tasty.


Coming in at around 50 grams of sugar, the Pumpkin Spice Latte isn’t going to be making any health drink lists.

REAL pumpkin, on the other hand, is full of healthy nutrients.

For one, it’s very high in Vitamin A. This vitamin plays a big role in promoting the health of your eyes, and guarding against macular degeneration.

Pumpkin also contains a good amount of Vitamin C. What better way to boost your immune system and prepare for cold season that with the ultimate Fall fruit (did you even know pumpkin was a fruit?)

Want to show your skin some extra love? Pumpkin is chock full of carotenoids (these are the organic pigments that give pumpkin its color.) They work as antioxidants that can support skin rejuvenation.

Behold, the Keto Pumpkin Donut with Coconut Butter Glaze

-1/2 C pumpkin puree
-1/4 cup heavy cream
-4 eggs
-2 tbsp coconut oil
-1 tsp vanilla extract
-1 tsp vanilla liquid stevia
-1/2 C coconut flour
-1 tbsp pumpkin pie spice
-1 tsp baking powder
-1/4 tsp baking soda
-1/2 cup granulated Erythritol
-1/8 tsp salt
-2 scoops Organisource Collagen Peptides

1. Combine pumpkin purée, heavy cream, eggs, coconut oil, vanilla extract, and stevia.
2. In a separate bowl combine coconut flour, pumpkin pie spice, baking powder, baking soda, erythritrol, salt, and collagen.
3. Fold the dry ingredients into the wet. Grease donut pan and bake at 350 for 15 – 18 mins.
4. For coconut butter glaze, simply melt coconut butter and add in vanilla stevia with a shake or two of pumpkin spice (both to taste!) and drizzle over warm donuts.

The Hunger Games: Stop Killing Yourself to Losing Weight

No one likes feeling hungry.

The need for food is the most hardwired biological drive; it’s goes back to the earliest humans and their need to survive.

But then again…

Our cave ancestors didn’t have the option of hitting up the Wendy’s that’s right around the corner.

Or the thousands of processed items we can get at any grocery store/gas station/shopping mall, etc.

So while hunger was once a vital indicator that food was needed thousands of years ago,

Today it might just be a symptom of boredom, depression, or even addiction.

Our relationship to food has TOTALLY changed.

And this is why losing weight can be so difficult.

Because no matter what diet you go on,

If your goal is to drop some pounds, you are going to have to get used to some level.

There’s no getting around it.

If this wasn’t true, than everybody would be walking around at their ideal weight. It’s easy to see that this is not the case.

Here are a few tips to help you deal with hunger that might help:

  1. Eat slower. Try to be a bit more mindful when you eat. SLOW DOWN. If you’re shoveling a meal down while watching TV or looking at your phone, it’s very possible that you’re missing the early signs of being full. Chew your food a bit longer, this not only can help you enjoy it more, but it goes a long way in helping the digestive process.
  2. Drink more water. You already know how important it is to get enough H2O. A lot of the times when we think, “Hey, I could go for a snack,” we’re actually in the early stages of dehydration. When you first notice that you’re hungry, drink some water and see what happens.
  3. Consider your “Why.” Say you just finished your dinner on a new diet plan and your kinda like, “Is that IT?” Tell yourself WHY you’re embarking on this journey. Maybe you want to make sure you’re healthy and be active with your kids. Maybe you want to finally fit into that smaller size. Whatever it is, keep reminding yourself that nothing that’s awesome and worth having comes easily.
  4. Put veggies into play. You can eat as much celery as you want. Literally. Other green and leafy vegetables are similar in their ability to eat huge amounts without worrying about bowing your daily calories. Of course, this doesn’t mean you can drown them in ranch, but at least it’s it’s a good option.

Turn hunger into your opponent. When those thoughts of “just have one little piece of cake” start rearing their ugly heads, smack them down!

Think of how fortunate you are to live in a culture in which you DON’T have to worry about not having enough food. There are millions of people around the world that don’t have that luxury.

The point is you can redefine your relationship to hunger while losing weight.

Will it be a bit uncomfortable at times?


But will it get easier as you have one little success over it after another.

Yup. You better believe it.

And if you cave in sometimes, don’t beat yourself up. Just get back on track and keep moving forward.

Life tends to work out best when we don’t treat it like a sprint.

It’s a marathon.
