The True Story of How I Lost Over 100 Pounds in a Year (and You Can Too)

Another article about weight loss.
Obviously, there’s no shortage of posts, blogs, ebooks, etc. about shedding body fat.
But after personally losing over 100 lbs, I feel somewhat qualified to throw my two cents in.
I want to share my story because, regardless of how much info and advice is out there, so many still struggle with losing weight. But let me begin with a slightly-less-than-exciting announcement:
There are no “quick fixes.”
A few years ago, I sure as heck wish there was some magic diet or supplement that would fix what I had become.
I had never looked or felt worse in my entire life, one hundred pounds overweight.
I would get so out of breath from walking up a flight of stairs, you would have thought I just got done running laps around a track.
And the scariest part about it was how quickly it happened.
In my professional life, I was killing it. I began working for tech start-ups in Silicon Valley right out of college. Things started moving fast for me, and I couldn’t have been more excited.
The problem: my career resulted in a SUPER-sedentary lifestyle.
80-hour workweeks became my norm. I would sit hunched over in front of my laptop for long periods without ever getting up. It never registered how much I was negatively impacting my health. Today there’s a ton of research showing how detrimental prolonged sitting can be. But at the time, I didn’t even think twice about it.
My Recipe For Obesity
To add to my complete lack of exercise, my diet was awful. I’m talking junk food, fast food…just about anything except for REAL food.
The mirror never lies, and the one in my bathroom was brutally honest.
Something had to change…fast.
One of my business partners was into low carb eating, so I began asking him questions. I also began moving more. Slowly, I started feeling better. Once I saw some improvement, that was it. I was all in. No longer would I sacrifice my health.
Fast forward to today…
I’ve lost over 100 lbs and am in the best shape of my life.
And while there may be no quick fixes (at least not the kind that lead to lasting results), real change is possible. If I can do it, anyone can.
How I Transformed Myself
Have you ever heard of someone jumping onto some fad diet and losing weight, only to end up putting it back on?
I sincerely believe a holistic approach is the best way to achieve weight loss that lasts. Adopting a new lifestyle is what ended up working for me.
And to this end, diet and exercise should be the foundation. There’s just no getting around it.
I increased my physical activity. I cut out processed sugar.
Getting started is the hardest part. But once I got some momentum going, I felt (and saw) it. Changes began to happen. Then I got super motivated to do more.
As I continued my learning into health and wellness, I began researching supplementation. I was seeing some significant improvements though my diet and exercise. But I wanted to know if I could take things to the next level.
When it came to supplements, I was very skeptical. And there wasn’t anything about some extreme “fat burners” that interested me. Some of these products have been described as “legal meth.” No, thanks. I hate the jittery feeling.
But my slightly-obsessive research turned up some natural nutritional powerhouses that seemed like they had some real potential for weight loss.
So, I made myself into a sort of guinea pig. I tried a TON of different stuff. I made up different combinations. I learned that there are crucial, all-natural dietary elements that can turbocharge weight loss programs. And I had this gut feeling (no pun intended) that certain nutritional compounds worked even better when combined with others.
It turns out I was right.
There’s a saying from science that goes “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”
It’s a fancy way of saying something works better as a result of each part working in combination with the others.
Through plenty of trial and error, I found five pieces to my natural weight loss formula. On their own, they offer excellent benefits. But my experience was that by “stacking” them, I broke into a new level of incinerating body fat. My energy went through the roof.
Here is the formula that helped me bust through plateaus and end up shedding over 100 pounds of body fat.
The Fab Five
Get down with ACV.
You’ve probably heard of Apple Cider Vinegar. It’s been around for centuries and has a ton of health benefits. But let’s focus on how it can help you shed some lbs.
The active agent in Apple Cider Vinegar is acetic acid. Being a short-chain fatty acid, acetic acid has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity. This works to lower your blood sugar – a significant step in defending against diabetes. ACV actually slows down the emptying of your stomach. You can say it’s an all-natural appetite suppressant.
SA recent study found that people who drank 1-2 tablespoons of ACV a day weighed less and had considerably less abdominal fat than the control group (1)
Fatty Fish are Fat Loss Rockstars
The Omega-3 Fatty Acids that make up fish oil have shown awesome effects on promoting cardiovascular and brain health. But pure fish oil is a must for weight loss. Piggybacking off of Apple Cider Vinegar, fish oil has been shown to curb appetite and increase insulin sensitivity. But it brings more to the table as well.
Omega-3s in fish oil have been sown to boost metabolism (2). This means your body’s furnace is better at burning calories for energy. And with exercise, this effect is even stronger. Another study showed that women who took 3 grams of fish oil daily over 12 weeks burned 10% more calories – and 19–27% more fat! – when they exercised (3).
The Power of Raspberries
The compound that gives raspberries their unique aroma is called raspberry ketones. Dr. Oz called Raspberry Ketones a “miracle fat-burner in a bottle.” I’m not going that far, but this compound is gaining popularity for a reason.
Raspberry Ketones have a similar structure to synephrine and ephedrine. These are two substances that have documented, metabolism-boosting and fat-burning properties. (4) Raspberry Ketones also are structurally-similar to capsaicin (the active ingredient that gives cayenne pepper it’s thermogenic effects.)
Mean Green Coffee
Fun fact: coffee beans have a greenish color before they are roasted.
The natural caffeine found in coffee beans is well known. It helps to curb appetite, give a nice energy kick, and promote fat burning.
But pre-roasted coffee beans are high in a substance called Chlorogenic Acid. This substance is chock full of weight loss properties. The thing is, during the roasting process, the Chlorogenic Acid is lost. So green coffee bean extract puts all the benefits back into play when added to your diet.
A study took two groups of people and gave one regular coffee, and the other coffee plus green coffee bean extract. After twelve weeks, the regular coffee drinkers had lost an average of 3.7 pounds.
The coffee plus green coffee bean extract group lost 11.9 pounds. Their body fat percentages also decreased by 3.6%, where the plain coffee group saw only a 0.7% loss. (5)
One Awesome Fruit Peel
There’s a small, pumpkin-shaped called Garcinia Cambogia. It’s native to Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and parts of Africa. So don’t expect to run into at your local grocery store produce department.
Lately, it’s been found that extracts from the fruit’s peel have demonstrated some pretty impressive fat-burning effects. This is due to the peel being rich in hydroxycitric acid. (6) What’s so great about this acid is that it helps inhibit an enzyme responsible for storing body fat. So the fat gets burned for energy instead of shuttled to your problem areas.
Garcinia Cambogia also can boost serotonin levels. This “feel-good” neurotransmitter improves mood (and can curb any potential stress-related snacking!)
From Good Results to “Wow!”
I feel it’s important to emphasize that a solid diet and exercise are the main drivers behind any successful weight loss journey.
But I also have to say that I’m not sure if I would have reached the results I did – as relatively fast as I did – without adding these five ingredients to the mix.
The synergistic effects of this formula of mine took me by surprise. The appetite-suppression working with natural thermogenic effects helped me do more from eating less.
What’s most important is that I kept the weight OFF.
Even though I’m not looking to drop weight lie I was before, I don’t plan on giving up on my weight loss formula anytime soon. I just feel too good.
Now when I look in the mirror, its honesty is something I can appreciate.
