Beware the Pumpkin Spice Latte!!

Beware the Pumpkin Spice Latte!!

Blog

We’re getting right into the heart of pumpkin season.

For many, that means one thing: the Pumpkin Spice Latte.

Every fall Starbucks rolls out one of their most beloved coffee drinks ever.

And they are pretty tasty.

But…

Coming in at around 50 grams of sugar, the Pumpkin Spice Latte isn’t going to be making any health drink lists.

REAL pumpkin, on the other hand, is full of healthy nutrients.

For one, it’s very high in Vitamin A. This vitamin plays a big role in promoting the health of your eyes, and guarding against macular degeneration.

Pumpkin also contains a good amount of Vitamin C. What better way to boost your immune system and prepare for cold season that with the ultimate Fall fruit (did you even know pumpkin was a fruit?)

Want to show your skin some extra love? Pumpkin is chock full of carotenoids (these are the organic pigments that give pumpkin its color.) They work as antioxidants that can support skin rejuvenation.

Pumpkin is full of magnesium, and potassium. These minerals are great for heart health, and they’re also easy to not get enough of in our diet.

And to top it all off, pumpkin has a ton of fiber, so you can feel full on a small amount of calories. It’s a tasty option for a super-healthy side dish.

Like we said at the beginning, unfortunately the famous Pumpkin Spic Latte doens’t deliver any of pumpkin’s nutritonal benefits.

But in the spirit of the season, we wanted to supply you with a much healthier -and just as delicious – pumpkin treat!

The Hunger Games: Stop Killing Yourself to Losing Weight

The Hunger Games: Stop Killing Yourself to Losing Weight

Blog

No one likes feeling hungry.

The need for food is the most hardwired biological drive; it’s goes back to the earliest humans and their need to survive.

But then again…

Our cave ancestors didn’t have the option of hitting up the Wendy’s that’s right around the corner.

Or the thousands of processed items we can get at any grocery store/gas station/shopping mall, etc.

So while hunger was once a vital indicator that food was needed thousands of years ago,

Today it might just be a symptom of boredom, depression, or even addiction.

Our relationship to food has TOTALLY changed.

And this is why losing weight can be so difficult.

Because no matter what diet you go on,

If your goal is to drop some pounds, you are going to have to get used to some level.

There’s no getting around it.

If this wasn’t true, than everybody would be walking around at their ideal weight. It’s easy to see that this is not the case.

Here are a few tips to help you deal with hunger that might help:

  1. Eat slower. Try to be a bit more mindful when you eat. SLOW DOWN. If you’re shoveling a meal down while watching TV or looking at your phone, it’s very possible that you’re missing the early signs of being full. Chew your food a bit longer, this not only can help you enjoy it more, but it goes a long way in helping the digestive process.
  2. Drink more water. You already know how important it is to get enough H2O. A lot of the times when we think, “Hey, I could go for a snack,” we’re actually in the early stages of dehydration. When you first notice that you’re hungry, drink some water and see what happens.
  3. Consider your “Why.” Say you just finished your dinner on a new diet plan and your kinda like, “Is that IT?” Tell yourself WHY you’re embarking on this journey. Maybe you want to make sure you’re healthy and be active with your kids. Maybe you want to finally fit into that smaller size. Whatever it is, keep reminding yourself that nothing that’s awesome and worth having comes easily.
  4. Put veggies into play. You can eat as much celery as you want. Literally. Other green and leafy vegetables are similar in their ability to eat huge amounts without worrying about bowing your daily calories. Of course, this doesn’t mean you can drown them in ranch, but at least it’s it’s a good option.

Turn hunger into your opponent. When those thoughts of “just have one little piece of cake” start rearing their ugly heads, smack them down!

Think of how fortunate you are to live in a culture in which you DON’T have to worry about not having enough food. There are millions of people around the world that don’t have that luxury.

The point is you can redefine your relationship to hunger while losing weight.

Will it be a bit uncomfortable at times?

Yes.

But will it get easier as you have one little success over it after another.

Yup. You better believe it.

And if you cave in sometimes, don’t beat yourself up. Just get back on track and keep moving forward.

Life tends to work out best when we don’t treat it like a sprint.

It’s a marathon.

Did We Find the Best Diet Ever?

Did We Find the Best Diet Ever?

Blog

Today we’d like to tell you about a new diet program. It’s the best ever!

You can eat as much as you want!

You can eat whatever you want!

And you’ll lose about 10 lbs a week!!!!

========================
EVERY DAY IS A CHEAT DAY!!!
========================

Full disclosure: **we are being totally sarcastic here and in no way endorse this**

Here’s the point:

“New” diets will be making clever marketers rich forever.

Before regulators starting putting a halt to certain methods of advertising, you would actually see stuff like the beginning of this email.

But there are still questionable programs out there.

So what IS the best diet?

It’s the one that works for YOU.

Keto worked for us. It’s big right now, and for good reason. An over-reliance on sugar has proven to be disastrous for a ton of people.

It wasn’t that long ago that fat was considered a “killer” and had to be avoided at all costs.

Luckily, today we know better.

But does that mean no one should have any carbs?

Not necessarily.

Again, there are WAY too many variables in each person’s metabolic equation to make any kind of blanket statement.

The moral of the story:

Discover the foods that work best for you. It may take a little trial and error.

And always take people’s — even “experts” — advice with a grain of salt.

But not too big a grain of salt…

…because sodium is bad 😉

Do “Nothing” For Better Fitness

Do “Nothing” For Better Fitness

If something has been around for a few thousand years, odds are there’s a reason for it. It probably works.

Yoga is a great example. Its beginnings can be traced back to northern India about 5,000 years ago.

That’s a pretty good run!

Today, yoga is everywhere. It’s become part of our culture. Yoga studios are found in every town and city, TV commercials show doing yoga in addition to their daily activities.

The merchandising for yoga (apparel, mats, books, etc) has skyrocketed.

We’re talking a billion-dollar business. Pretty sure the originators in ancient India would’ve gotten a kick out of all this.

But while it’s awesome that so many people have embraced this practice of health and wellness, it’s more just physical fitness. It’ more than just seeing how bendy you can get.

Meditation is just as important in yoga as the postures are.

And many different cultures have been practicing meditation for millennia.

Modern science has only served to confirm meditation as something you should be looking into. There are now hundreds of scientific studies that demonstrate that meditation can:

  • Enhance self-awareness
  • Help to lower blood pressure
  • Combat age-related memory loss
  • Balance Emotions
  • Control anxiety
  • Reduce stress

Those last two are more important than a lot of us realize.

Unregulated stress can have terrible effects on our health and wellness.

When we’re stressed out, the body releases the hormone cortisol into the system which primes us for action. It’s the “fight or flight” effect. While this is ideal in emergency situations, being in this state on a regular basis begins to wreak havoc on our bodies’ internal environments.

It speeds up the aging process WAY too fast.

The speed and constant bombardment of information in modern life can be taking a toll and adding unnecessary stress without us even realizing it. Then there are work, family, and other obligations.

When you develop a meditation practice, you are essentially allowing your mind and body to “unload.” What’s cool is that you don’t have to become a Zen master and meditate for hours to experience the great benefits.

It can be a little challenging beginning to meditate; we’re not used to sitting and doing “nothing.”

Luckily, there are a bunch of apps like Headspace and Calm that make learning meditation easier than ever. All you have to start out with is a few minutes each day.

But it can be amazing what just a few moments can do.

If you haven’t yet, you seriously might want to look into starting a meditation practice. We’re learning more and more about how the mind and body are NOT separate. And taking care of both will skyrocket your overall health and happiness!

Stop working out! It’s bad for you!

Stop working out! It’s bad for you!

Blog

Did you now that, in the not too distant past, there were medical professionals that said rigorous exercise would overtax your heart and end up killing you?

Of course, these were the same medical professionals that would talk about what brand of cigarettes they prefer.

What’s kinda crazy though is that some people still believe exercise is BAD for you!

It all started in the days of ancient Greece.

A messenger named Pheidippides had to run a long distance to convey the outcome of a decisive battle.

He delivered the message, and then dropped dead from exhaustion.

Guess what the name of the coastal province where the battle took place was?

Marathon.

And so it began.

Of course, the part that gets left out is that Pheidippides ended up running about 300 miles! (150 of those in just 2 days)

Today (most of us) know better. Study after study has shown the benefits of pushing ourselves and physical exertion.

But you don’t have to do Spartan races or ultramarathons.

It turns out that ANY kind of movement is beneficial; some is always better than none.

Walking is one of the most underrated activities you can do to promote health.

Or get down on the floor and just stretch and move your body around.

You don’t have to get “hardcore” right from the beginning. A little bit of movement every day is better than killing yourself in the gym once or twice a week.

You can always build momentum and work your way up to whatever level of fitness you want.

The point to all of this is just to keep getting at it. On the days we feel less-than-motivated, it can help just to do something.

If you didn’t make it to the gym as planned today, take the dog for a walk or do some chores around the house.

You’ll feel less guilty and get the blood pumping in the process.

One step at a time. Literally.

Mans Best Friend. And Your Number 1 Health Coach.

Mans Best Friend. And Your Number 1 Health Coach.

Blog

Say hello to one of the best “health coaches” around…

No, this isn’t a joke!

It turns out that studies show that owning pets can increase your health, but this especially applies to dogs.

A few years ago, there was a study conducted in the Czech Republic about heart disease.

Guess what the most amount of people with the LEAST history of heart disease all had in common?

Yup. They all had pups!

But that’s not all.

That study was published by the Mayo Clinic and was set to re-evaluate the participants every 5 years to check in on them up through the year 2030.

The most recent evaluation consisted of 1,769 people, none of whom had any history of heart disease.

Regardless of age, education level, or sex, the pet owners showed superior health to those who didn’t have any pets, with dog owners showing even more!

Dog owners were found to be:

  • More physically active
  • Geared towards better diets
  • In possession of better blood glucose levels

Obviously, dogs are more active animals. Even when we’re feeling lazy, they’re not about to let us forget about their walks!

So if you’re looking for a live-in personal trainer who won’t pressure you to sign up for expensive training packages, the answer could be as close as your nearest shelter or pet store…

…just don’t follow their diet plans.
