Who Needs Collagen Anyway?

Who Needs Collagen Anyway?

Are you over the age of 25? Do you have hair? Skin and nails? Bones and muscles? Do you move around? Are you exposed to environmental toxins like the sun, chemicals and free radicals? Then you, my friend, probably need a collagen supplement.

Collagen — consisting of the four essential amino acids glycine, proline, arginine and hydroxyproline — makes up 30% of all protein found in our bodies. It is the main component of our bones and connective tissue (i.e., the tendons that connect muscles to bone and the ligaments that attach bones to joints), supporting movement and providing padding between joints so bones don’t grind against each other. It is also part of the connective tissue in our skin that provides firmness, suppleness and elasticity.

While most abundantly located in our skin, bones, tendons and ligaments, collagen is actually everywhere – from our hair and nail to our blood vessels and digestive tract to our cornea, gums, cartilage and major organs. Its main function is to provide strength, integrity, firmness and elasticity to the various bodily structures as a means of support and protection. Derived from the Greek, “kolla,” (meaning, glue), collagen is essentially the glue that holds our bodies together.

muscle

Without going into a full science lesson about osteoblasts, osteoclasts and the like, suffice it to say that our bodies are constantly building (-blasts) and breaking down (-clasts) collagen. But some time in our mid-20s, collagen production slows down, while collagen destruction speeds up. The results: cell structures weaken, hair thins, skin sags and wrinkles, joints stiffen and tendons and ligaments become less flexible. Oh, the joys of aging!

And time and age aren’t the only destroyers of collagen. Environmental factors like excessive sun exposure, consumption and/or use of chemical toxins and pollutants (everything from tobacco and processed food to some cosmetics and household cleaners) and free radicals can exasperate the process. Even exercising dismantles collagen, as microscopic tears occur in muscles.

Before you throw away your sneakers and stay inside forever, there’s an easier solution: collagen peptides powder. Collagen peptides are made of the same amino acids as collagen, but are hydrolyzed and broken down into shorter chains of amino acids, making them more digestible and bioavailable (i.e., better absorbed into the bloodstream). Once digested, cells construct the peptides back into full-length collagen chains used to repair and rebuild skin, bones and connective tissue – thereby improving skin hydration and elasticity, bone, tendon and ligament strength and reducing joint inflammation. As a source of protein (averaging 10g per serving), collagen peptides also aid in muscle repair and growth, and can even be used directly by cells as a source of energy.

Stronger bones, bigger muscles, more flexible joints and less wrinkles … What are you waiting for? Go ahead and add a scoop of collagen peptides powder to your pre-workout morning coffee, your post-workout smoothie or any of your favorite recipes. Your body will thank you.

5 Reasons Bone Broth Should Be a Part of Your Diet

5 Reasons Bone Broth Should Be a Part of Your Diet

Bone Broth has been a staple of the human diet for thousands of years, but today it is enjoying a resurgence of interest due to its powerful health benefits. This miracle substance has countless nutritional and healing properties like helping to treat leaky gut syndrome, overcome food intolerances and allergies, improving joint health, reducing cellulite, and boosting immune system. Here are 5 good reasons you should take the leap and add it to your diet today!

5 REASONS BONE BROTH SHOULD BE A PART OF YOUR DIET:

1. NOURISH YOUR GUT

Bone broth is full of gelatin and collagen, which soothes the intestinal tract and helps heal leaky gut, aka intestinal permeability. With stress, diet, alcohol, caffeine and over the counter pain relievers wreaking havoc on our intestines, almost anything we can do to repair the gut is beneficial, as a healthy intestinal tract is essential to overall good health.

2. BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

Yup, your grandma was definitely right about that chicken soup nurturing you back to health. A traditional folk remedy for colds and flus, bone broth provides a rich array of nutrients which help to support your immune system. Cysteine, an amino acid found in chicken, helps to thin mucus so it can be expelled more easily. When fighting a cold, make a chicken broth with added spices or peppers to make it spicy to help keep the mucus moving.

3. INCREASE BIO-AVAILABLE MINERALS

The mineral content of our foods is usually reduced as a result of soil degradation, which leaves many of us with compromised absorption due to poor gut health. These minerals are critical to so many bodily functions and have an impact everything from our bones to our mood and our sleep. Supplying calcium, magnesium, potassium, silicon, sulfur and phosphorous, bone broth provides an excellent means of boosting your mineral intake.

4. PROMOTE HEALTHY SKIN

Bone broth is an extremely rich source of amino acids that support your skin regeneration like glycine and proline. Along with collagen, the ultimate skin food, bone broth can improve skin elasticity and fight wrinkles.

5. REDUCE INFLAMMATION

Bone broth was used to reduce inflammation long before ibuprofen was ever on the shelf. Glucosamine, chondroitin, collagen, and gelatin support your joints, bones, and reduce inflammation throughout your body.

In case you needed a sixth reason…

The healing benefits of Bone broth have never been easier to add to your diet than with Organisource Bone Broth Protein. With this easy to use protein powder, you get all the nutritional and health benefits of traditional Bone Broth but leave out the long hard process of stewing bones and extracting the goodness.

6 Tips for Staying Active at Work

6 Tips for Staying Active at Work

One of the biggest obstacles to living a healthy lifestyle in the 21st century is working. Like it or not, a lot of jobs in western nations have moved away from physical activity and now promote long hours at a desk, usually in front of a computer screen. Sitting around for long hours is at best not helping our health and at worst is actually taking years off our lives. Plenty of recent research suggests that sitting for too long each day can even start to cancel out the effects of working out. Staying healthy is increasingly becoming a game of creatively integrating exercise into normal activities. Try out these 6 tips for staying active at work.

1. Plan a Walking Meeting

Who says that meetings have to take place is stuffy board rooms? Sure, sometimes you will need your computer to give a presentation to a large group; but if your meeting is with one or two other people why not take it outside. Whether you are making revisions to a document or brainstorming ideas for your next project, go for a walk to get the creative juices flowing. The change of scenery will spark your creativity and improve your mood.

2. Drink Lots of Water

The worst thing you can do for yourself is spend 4 straight hours staring at a computer screen. Use any tactic you can to break up the tedium. Drinking lots of water will not only help you stay hydrated and keep your body working efficiently, it will force you to take more bathroom breaks. If your desk is far from the bathroom, that means a little extra walking. If the bathroom is close by, at least you will be using your leg muscles to get out of your chair. Every little bit helps.

3. Set a Calendar Reminder to Take Breaks

If keeping lots of water handy isn’t your thing at least try using the technology at your fingertips to remind you to be active. Every workplace calendar program will have an easy option to help you get an hourly reminder to get up and move around. Take a lap around the office to talk to your co-workers or just to look out the window. Odds are you will actually get more work done.

4. Don’t Email People in Your Own Office

One of the easiest temptations to give into at the office is the urge to email people who are in the same building as you. The more you can resist that urge the better off you will be. Don’t let a few flights of stairs prevent you from asking for someone’s input face-to-face. Not only will you get more exercise and build better relationships, you will probably get the answers you were looking for a whole lot quicker.

5. Go Out for Lunch

One of the easiest things you can do to get more physical activity into your day is to use your lunch break as a mild workout session. Go for a walk around the neighborhood. Get some fresh air. Above all, don’t confuse this with an excuse to buy fast food every day. On the contrary, pack a lunch and walk to a nice location to eat it. Getting out the office will reboot your brain and help you get through the afternoon with more energy.

6. Get a Standing Desk

Finally, if you can, change your work environment itself. Plenty of companies are now willing to help employees improve their health because more and more of them are realizing that healthy employees get more done and cost less to provide health care too. Try out one of the many standing desk options currently on the market and watch as your co-workers follow suit.

How to Go Paleo in 3 Easy Steps

How to Go Paleo in 3 Easy Steps

With SO much information out there about the Paleo diet sometimes information overload can make people second guess themselves and when all is said and done, not even give paleo a chance. That is why we created this guide. We wanted to make it quick and easy to give this “diet” (although we hate using that term) a chance.

STEP 1: THROW IT ALL AWAY

Throw everything that’s not Paleo away. That means you should grab the trash can and toss: refined sugars, all grains (including rice and corn), starchy tubers, legumes (beans), some meats (anything processed with nitrites and additives like hot dogs), “vegetable” oils (corn, peanut, soybean, cottonseed, and iodized salt (Himalayan is fine).

STEP 2: STOCK UP ON EVERYTHING PALEO

Go to the grocery store and stock up on everything Paleo. It’s extremely important that everything in your kitchen stays paleo friendly. This will force you to eat foods you are supposed to and help your plan stick. Stock up on:

  • Organic, naturally-raised, grass-fed meats like: beef, bison, venison, wild game, pork, chicken, and duck.
  • Seafood like: salmon, tuna, cod, perch, tilapia, mahi, scallops, and shrimp.
  • Eggs
  • Vegetables like: spinach, greens, broccoli, cabbage, brussell sprouts, onions, garlic, fresh herbs, mushrooms, tomatoes, bell peppers, tomatoes, and sweet potatoes.
  • Fruits and berries like: watermelon, avocado, cantaloupe, mango, peaches, oranges, apples, bananas, blueberries, and plums.
  • Fats like: coconut oil, ghee, and coconut milk. Nuts. Seeds.

STEP 3: EAT LIKE YOU MEAN IT

The third and final step to our Organisource Guide to Going Paleo in 3 Easy Steps: Eat like you mean it.

You’ve overhauled your kitchen and pantry and gone on a Paleo shopping spree. Now it’s time to commit. When we say eat like you mean it we mean figure out a regimen that works for you and don’t do anything that will put yourself in a position to quit or fail. Eat when you’re hungry, Make meals that include a portion (or two) of meat, a portion of veggies/fruits, and fat. Don’t eat when you’re not hungry. Consider fasting and don’t be lazy. As you get used to the new regimen and once your body has adjusted to the paleo foods you’ll be ingesting a little exercise will go a long way. When it comes to eating one of the best things about the paleo diet is that it’s one of the most tasty diets I can remember ever trying. There are so many amazing things to munch on to keep away from those high sugar high carb snacks you used to indulge in. Checkout our Instagram profile for tons of delicious recipes.

Now that you have all 3 steps go ahead and give it a try and let us know how your journey goes. Starting a nutritional regimen like the Paleo diet can and will change your life if you commit and stick to it ?
